Discussions of civil rights, program evaluation, public health, and the delivery of human services must rely on sound facts and analyses that come from survey research, but often those facts are not available in the context of gay-related policy issues because lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) 1 people cannot be identified in surveys without specific questions pertaining to sexual orientation.įortunately, several private and some publicly funded surveys in the United States have begun to ask questions that allow identification of dimensions of sexual orientation, which has allowed researchers to identify the important role of sexual orientation as a predictor of health, social, and economic outcomes. In recent years, public policy debates have heightened the need for high quality scientific data on the sexual orientation of adults and young people in the United States.
